The Homeschool Mother's Journal - 18 April

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…
We returned from a 4 day trip away to a lovely location in the foothills of The Great Dividing Range south of Tamworth, NSW.  It has taken some time for me to catch up on all the washing created by a family of 6 going gold panning, trout fishing and just general adventuring.  Even harder when the weather has been wet.

In our homeschool this week…
We learnt alot about gold mining, gold panning, old woolen mills and trout farming while away.  Just need to blog it in the kids' blogs.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
After a short trip away we didn't go far from home, just down to the local Bunnings for plants for our vegetable patch.

My favorite thing this week was…
I was really glad to get some laminating sheets.  I had run out a while ago and I hadn't realised how many things had piled up that needed laminating.  Can I just say I Love My Laminator?  lol

And I also loved the visit to the Mt Misery Gold Mine.  (Ironically this is in a place with a road called Happy Valley Road.)  It was fun reading all the old newspaper articles about how gold was discovered.  And I loved browsing through this store where I bought myself a pudding bowl for my next Christmas pudding.

What’s working/not working for us…
We are on school holidays while my dh is off work too.  But I have realised that I am not getting the boys to read out loud to me often enough.  And there are some good stories to read too that I can read out loud to them.  We really need to finish Charlotte's Web soon.

Homeschool questions/thoughts I have…
I am wondering how mums who read aloud manage to keep their voice.  Is there a suggested drink or technique to not losing my voice, because believe me, with 4 boys I do not want to have "no voice" when it is needed?

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
My favourite blog post I read this week was this one at Sheila Wray Gregoire's Blog.

Best wishes
Jen

  1. I might need you to teach me about all the stuff I should laminate. I thought I'd use it all the time, but ... well... it's out of the box. I'm not sure if I've even tried it out to make sure it works.

  2. Cristi, I laminate my to do lists and my routines. I hate looking at a list and not remembering where I am supposed to be at. Mummy brain I guess! Anyway if I laminate them I can use a white board marker or a permanent marker to cross things off and can see clearly what still needs to be done. At the end of the day I take to each list with the methylated spirits (white spirit?) and clean them off for another go the next day.

I also laminate game pieces for all the activities I print off from the Activity Bags for Preschoolers books. Lots of fun and much easier to clean if grubby fingers play with them.

  3. I don't laminator much, but I'm glad I have one. I use my spiral binder a whole heap more. Now that is indispensable!!

Regarding reading out loud, I read aloud despite my voice going on me. I think you do get better at it, but I am certainly croaky after our three hour journey from church on Sunday evenings! Lots of water to sip is a must for me.

  4. Hi Jen,
I have been looking around at your blog. I actually tried to comment elsewhere and couldn't for some reason.
Thanks for visiting and following at my place.

  5. Nice to see you here Ruby. I have posts over 14 days old moderated. Apparently older posts are the ones more likely to be spammed therefore the setting.

I have been having a great time finding more Australian homeschoolers like yourself. Be sure to check my blog list so you can find new Aussie homeschoolers too.

    Best wishes

  6. Hi Jen,
thanks for your recent following on my blog:)
Looks like you might be in the same state as me though I need to check out your blog more to find out if I am right:)
for reading aloud I know some mums use librivox.org (which has free audio downloadable books). I only have one child so I do all our reading though I've burned a lot of stories onto cd from librivox which she listens to during her rest times. hth.xxx Rosemary
